Healthy Food and Meeting the Needs of the Wellness Segment

The Nielsen recently reported that 39% of shoppers suffer from some kind of illness.

So seeking foods that help solve their problems is high on their list. Examples include gluten free foods, or low sugar and fat free foods for obesity and sugar diabetes problems.

These folks represent 20 million households and are you ready, $120 billion in annual grocery shopping.

With this healthcare segment in mind we are launching a range of wellness products.

LunchBrowns, a simple daily brown bag of five organic foods for school lunches or snacking. The brown bag contains a juice or water, cookie, protein, fruit and cheese snack. Mom never had it easier to provide a healthy lunch snack with little effort. A zesty recipe of products is also available.

On the hydration side we have a well researched HTWO™ water with an extra hydrogen molecule. This stamina water assists in many areas of our daily lives, ensuring we have the stamina to continue with little stress.

HTWO™ water is packed at Penta5 USA on a patented machinery system provided by PGS Machines. The unique four sided pouch and cap structure retains the hydrogen for an extended shelf life period.

The aim is to help fight unnecessary diseases.

Startups are doing everything at twice the speed in 2016 to survive bureaucracy and the "why change" mentality.

We were thrilled when our new wellness company, Penta 5 USA, decided to take the giant step and go to the market place and raise funds for growth the old fashioned way. From application to approval a lightning 9 months of breath taking activity.

For a little startup like ours we are lucky that we are nimble and fast to move. All types of demands were made and we met them.

The big chemical companies around us thrive on timeline drag into the distant future. They set the pace in the wellness segment and so the bureaucrats follow.

We have the desire and need to go fast and face this slow disconnect at every corner. Are we in the 21st century or what?

We are working in the wellness segment which is very much against change. Sometimes our frustration is high because at every corner we find road blocks. Established companies are comfortable in supplying the same old chemicals that have not worked for years and the problems persist. Why you might ask? If their products worked why do we continue to have problems?

The new millennials are going to shake this old tree and the fruit left behind is going to be bigger, fresher, and meet their needs. All-natural, non toxic, environmentally friendly
and a solution they can see. Just look around at brands, stores that are dying because they are ignoring these millennial generation needs.

We have modern all-natural products fully tested that will help people every day in their busy lives.

Our staff and keen interested customers understand that we are subject to multiple layers of reviews and approvals to sell our products, but do not understand the time to market.

Every step forward is an adventure. After all we are new without much of a track record and so we need to prove we are resilient and are sticking around.

Our strategy has become to embark on opportunities that the market presents to us like the Zika scare, where our all-natural ANYTIME no-bite Lotion has laboratory proven results that no mosquito carrying the Zika virus will come near you.

We have donated product to NGO's and churches and their letters back showing smiling children who are not at risk from mosquitos makes it all worthwhile. Pity we can't do this closer to home.

The future for us is to stay nimble, fast, and jump on any opportunity that presents us the chance to state our case and demonstrate our wellness proven solutions.

Boat and Tree People

Many people are amazed at some of the latest political swings overseas. However, Charles Gave, Chairman of Gavekal Research wrote about the age old battle between tree people and boat people.

Boat people after years of ascendency traditionally called broad minded and well travelled are in retreat.

Tree people known as stay at home and internally focused are rejecting global integration and surprise surprise, they want change. The Tree people are clawing back power.

Think Brexit, the new right in Europe and changes in South Africa.

The same change can be said for packaging. Can sales are down, StandUp pouch sales are growing every month and the millennials are demanding more environmentally friendly packaging.

We at PPi Technologies Group (logo name for all the companies) are looking more and more at making the pouch the product!

Our machine engineers are designing machines that can handle single film extrusions. We are offering more pouches with double compartments to Heat and Eat. Spouts abound and single serve thermoforms of all shapes are growing.

These changes are probably a warning to the established packaging suppliers: change and provide what the customer wants or lose.

The pendulum is swinging back to meeting what the market wants and not what the manufacturers want!

Food For All

It has been well documented that more than 30% of food is wasted where there are no packaging systems in place to pack farm harvest collected food.

Today of course it is sad to report that in modern economies more food is thrown away than eaten.

More than 200 years ago the economist Thomas Malthus worried that population growth would exceed food production. So far it has not.

What suddenly has started to worry the food corporations is that productivity of staple foods has reached a plateau. Yields are at their maximum. Next on the horizon is that the warming of the earth affects farming, thereby causing crop losses to increase.

The solution is going to require a lot of technology in how we manage the crops we plant; for example, genome-based formulas that allow crops to become more nutritious at the same time that crops with heat and drought properties are gaining interest.

Now that we can plan on nutritious high yield crops getting them harvest ready and packed quickly into pouches is essential. Pest prevention is absolutely necessary. So the storage silos have to be designed to be pest-free and packing rooms on site are essential as well as roads to take the crops to market.

The pouch being the perfect partner in all of this, allowing gas flushing, and improved shelf life. More pouches packed per container reduces the number of trucks and keeps all aware of the environmental concerns in the equation.

With predictions from the Food and Agricultural Organization of 10 billion world population by 2050, care should be taken to save as much food as harvested or the Malthusian worry will become a reality. All this augers well for the future of pouch packaging.

Millennials and email?

Surprise surprise, we learn that people actually guard the sanctity of their emails and this very much applies to the millennial generation. This does not mean they necessarily write emails but that they READ them, and newsletters let them comment within the article of interest by email. (See Clover for young woman).

Whilst millennials might not use emails for their social lives they sure like it for their records around finances and personal information gleaned from reading targeted newsletters. These are on selected subjects for example food, clothing, travel, organic, environment friendly products and finance.

The prediction that email would die with Twitter, instant messaging etc. has failed and a new found fact is that millennials like targeted newsletters and email allows them access to this information and for want of a better word the newsletter could become short versions of the long gone encyclopedias. Want school or car information look up a newsletter. Want to visit or buy a product, look at a targeted newsletter.

Suddenly a new market is emerging factual brief details by video and comments on a specific subject all via a newsletter.

The editor also becomes important and must be a millennial for the newsletter to gain a following.

The slick trick is all in the headline. Newsletter Editors are doing all they can to catch the millennials interest and allow them through the newsletter to read, watch videos, talk online and get into the subject rather than have a sales person try to sell them the product.

This makes the newsletter suddenly very private to the reader. You can almost access the mind of the writer through the story line in the article. This turns it into a conversation not a sales pitch.

All this is so important to the product marketing staff today. Keep ahead, know your customers has never been more important in selling in this information based society.

Consumer Market Changes

Today all companies are faced with a major consumer shift and the need for innovative products sets this pace.

The millennials are changing the supply chain.

The purchasing of a product is now part of socializing; the social networks have huge influence on the market; Mobile shopping continues to grow; the need to have organic healthy products and matching lifestyle.

The history of a product can be checked through the digital world and so it is important that this area is positive.

Looking at machinery sales shows the need for flexibility increases and package sizes related to health needs is becoming important.

The StandUp pouch continues to grow with new opening and closing spouts, twin compartments for mixing products and of course the benefit of top class printed image.

Looking ahead the need for home delivery means smaller display trays on store shelves. Internet sales will increase with shorter delivery times in the future.

The Future is Plastics!

In today's economy there are few business sectors as optimistic as the plastics industry.

The demand for plastics and especially StandUp pouches in one of 9 configurations is expected to outpace GDP growth over the next few years throughout world markets.

A big reason is getting more food from the farms to the stores (more packaging needed) and the huge emphasis on the organic food chain. The pouch industry requires a low capital structure and with this small entry barrier there are dozens of suppliers compared to the glass or cans segment with a handful of suppliers and major capital costs.

Plastic film structures can extend product shelf life from days to weeks and thus keep food from going bad and feed more people. Light weighting and stronger specifications still do the job and meet all sustainable objectives.

The pouch is considered a modern package and can be incinerated with full energy recovery. See reports on the incredible work and leading sustainable green effort made by Florida Power Light with their Waste to Energy plants. The plastic laminates have more BTU's per weight than coal.

As more people move to cities, food has to be available and the plastic tray, StandUp pouch and plastic vial will all find more uses.

Our PGS machine group of companies,  with several world leading technologies to make, fill and seal plastic packages is well positioned to take advantage of this new food pouch trend.

The Redi-2-DrinQ group which distributes spirits, cocktails and wine in pouches is getting some recognition and support from TV reality show personality Claudia Jordan. She is targeting the female segment and has commented that these StandUp pouches are safe in that rape drugs can't be added and secure in that no additional alcohol can be introduced. Of course they are fully sustainable and for example with 60 pouches in a shipping box require smaller warehouse and less transport on our roads.

Finally our wellness products company Penta 5 USA has introduced amongst several new products, the ground breaking MosquitoPaQ no-bite organic, no DEET or chemicals, non toxic range of products that confound the pregnant mosquito and prevent her looking for a blood meal. Just in time to fight mosquitoes as the Zika virus gets more attention.

Go plastics!

Relationship Marketing

All day long now it seems we receive emails, tweets, Facebook, LinkedIn messages and traditional marketing promotions to buy items. Sometimes it is just news and other times brand stories.

Branding is building a relationship with your customers by conveying a message that stands out or resonates. You create a relationship by delivering the product message and remaining credible.

Today we let social networking assist in doing the work for you. Thus you need a relationship building plan based on your product message and it has to be short, strong and repeatable.

What works today is the experience that people can have with your product. Show them the value of the brand and they want more.
So for example talking about the speed of a pouch machine is no longer important as is showing a video of a high speed system. A machine with endless pouches continuously moving down the packaging line says it all and a pouch counter in the corner confirms this. What really sends the message is a look at the waste bins and nothing inside means efficient, the presence of no labor on the line shows productivity and a video picture of easy cleaning wraps up the machine promotion.

We all know that messages and procedures presented in video has greater impact  and much higher retention than the written word. Remember the video must be kept short, sharp and standout. The relationship starts to build!

Functional Beverages

Our PENTA 5 USA BEVPAQ company signed an agreement with Mitogene the owners of HTWO™ Hydrogen Water a functional beverage that boosts cognitive health benefits.

The growing interest in functional beverages is being driven by consumers who want benefits ranging from energy, improved attention, memory focus and hydration.

Taste cannot be altered and having the benefits of a nutraceutical drink without the Chemicals makes HTWO™ water a must have.

Once again millennials are driving this market segment as they look for more healthy lifestyle. They want focus and attention. This can be described as calming their busy and over stimulated minds.

HTWO™ works to provide the body circulation  system with extra hydrogen molecule converted into increased energy.

Reported results are excellent and the web site is filled with stories of lifestyle improvements ranging from increased stamina in running, extended energy in the evening after a day at the office and finally several medical condition improvement that are being evaluated by a dozen medical doctors and hospitals.

The process of adding the extra hydrogen molecule is patented as is the pouch and filling is on equipment supplied by the PSG pouch filling group, where keeping the hydrogen in the water proved to be a challenge and now perfected.

Nice to see pouch machinery, gas technology and water turned into a functional beverage that helps humanity with no side effects except increased energy bringing out the Athlete in all of us!

Food Safety and Standard Operating Procedures

Today another scare from China. Opiates in the food of unsuspecting customers.

We all know humans can contaminate food by touching, through illness and bad cleaning operating procedures and now food recipe changes with illegal substances.

Our strategy is to take a systems approach to check all along the process for non-conformance to operating procedures.

In our pouch division PGS all our machines fill and close pouches with hot and ultrasonic seals that protect the contents and if opened illegally the consumer can see it had been tampered with. We claim tamper evident and this is for sure the best claim.

Food fraud is starting to become a worry and our NFC tagz partnership with IZipline allied gif placing a tagz on the pouch that the consumer with their Android phone can read about the package and confirm the original item and contents.

It is also essential to have a strong cleaning regime and also microbiological checks that it works. Check before washing and after and compare results.

Finally record keeping, video of production and cleaning operations plus tons of photos keeps staff aware that no change in operating procedures are allowed.

INNOVATE – What's the Experience?

Today marketing requires businesses to look beyond the aesthetics of a product.  Customers want to interact and tell you what they like or don't.  This is the experience!

Imagine logging onto our website and going to a machine HMI (just like to one on the machine now) and looking at the screen, touching buttons and seeing panels of what we offer.  Always keeping proprietary information confidential.  However this innovative start/stop machine experience will be good for the engineer/visitor to the site and help sales.

We plan this on our site in January 2016.  Any good marketing executive accepts that delivering consumer experience differentiates the product.  The key to experience is to offer insight and show our expertise across our product lines.  Allowing the customer/visitor to the site to experience the machine controls is a big experience  and innovation from us:  To offer this experience we have drawn ideas from sales, engineering, marketing and management.

Another way is for our site to let the client to get a look at machinery in a 3D model, drawings and the actual line.

The future no doubt is experience based on Innovation.

USDA's Food and Safety and Inspection Service

This government agency reviews and approves product labeling and ingredients of all new food products.

We have always been proponents of the minimal use of any chemicals in food or beverage and we are delighted with their ruling for natural products.

To be called natural the product does not contain any artificial flavor or flavoring, coloring ingredient, synthetic or artificial products and has minimal processing.

At Penta 5 USA all our wellness products fit within that definition and are packed in zero carbon dioxide footprint pouches that are incinerated in the Florida garbage waste to energy system.

We wish all a successful 2016.
